Barrel racing is a rodeo event in which a horse and rider attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time.
In 5D barrel racing, there five divisions. All riders, regardless of ability, run in the same barrel race. The five divisions are then determined by time brackets. The fastest result determines all subsequent divisions and the distribution of places. This system splits the divisions into categories determined by 0.5 seconds. The arena ground is raked after every 5 riders and if the event is large enough, it may require a big rake half way through the event.
At the end of a series, the top two highest point earners in each division receive awards.
